Unlocking the Secrets of Interior Design
Books, the web, television, radio... with all of the interior design advice that's out there, you'd be forgiven for thinking that you just need a degree in design so as to make a lovely interior for your home. But nothing may be farther from the reality. Interior design is more about inspiration, creativity and fun. In fact, interior design is one amongst the sole aspects of home-building where you'll be able to really let your wildest fantasies become.
Your house is a mirrored image of yourself: we all change as we age, so it's natural that your idea of interior design will change, too. One among the beauties of interior design is that it is a moveable feast: a bold, striking interior with radical design features might appeal to you once you are in your twenties, but you will feel differently about design when you're in your thirties or forties. Your life circumstances may have changed - you will have married, for instance, otherwise you may have children - and this may certainly have an effect on the way during which you decide on to style your home's interior.
The first step is knowing your interior. Whether you would like to re-design an area, a floor or maybe a full house, it is important to grasp what the space are used for, and who are going to be using it. A lounge or bedroom is ruined by the incorrect design style, so make your design project easier by deciding up-front how you plan to use your interior.
The next step is to think about who are using the space. What form of person are they? Your interior design should take their age, character and occupation into consideration. A bright, vibrant design might not be suitable for a studious or serious person, for instance. And a muted interior will suppress an artless spirit or free thinker. Make it a rule to style your interior round the inhabitants.
With your design foundation in situ, it is time to begin choosing your colour palette. Aim to incorporate 2 - 4 colours or shades: it'll be far flattering to your interior than one colour. And do not be afraid to contrast: bright reds and blues look stunning against a contemporary white interior, for instance, whereas tranquil greens and turquoises will add warmth to an old-fashioned, beamed interior. Be bold: try painting a 'feature wall' during a single colour, and contrast that with interesting accessories... it's an internal design trick which will really bring an area to life.
As any interior design expert knows, it is the finishing touches that may make all the difference. An oversized cushion with an ethnic design; an extended table made of a reclaimed railway sleeper; a fire stuffed with candles... little touches of design brilliance which will bring your interior to life.
